My time at Fairplay Stone Carvers has come to an end. It was exciting to be part of the many projects Nick had going on, and to even see projects such as the Bowery Bank project on to completion. I learned a lot more about the trade and am grateful for such a rare opportunity.
This last week was much of the same. Cutting facets into my block in order to create a round surface. Trying to carve level planes is slow going for novice as myself but all this repetition is proving to be good practice.

Another week of gritting our teeth and grinding away... We have to remove about two-thirds of the stone from these blocks before we will actually begin the moldings. Working with stone really exercises my patience and perseverance. The whole removal process is very slow and methodical, and can be overwhelming if looked at in its entirety. The key to keeping sanity is by going at the rock one step at a time and by focusing only on that stage. I can see now how this job isn't for everyone and I myself and am struggling to keep my spirits up..

I am currently working on cutting the shape down into a half-octagon of planes. These planes will then be cut again smaller and smaller until the edges can be rounded and a half circle is formed.
Nick had worked ahead on his stone to show us what needed to be done, and it seemed simple enough..... Why does Nick always have to make things look so dang easy! even after working with stone for the last three years I can't get over how stinking hard it is.

We started out by scribing the templates onto the peices. This in itself was a task as even though the stone are supposed to be square, there is usually some part the isn't square at all. At which point, we have to play a game with levels and squares to try and find the best suited side to work from.

Once we've found a suitable side and traced the templates we begin drilling. It's slow going even with the use of hammer drills and it took two days of straight drilling to get finished.

The drilling itself was pretty fun, we'd take much care keeping the large bit level and then do the same to the other side. The goal was to keep the hole so straight that it would meet the opposite hole and make a clean connection (a difficult feat as the bit wanted to wander in the 3ft of stone).
A few artists really stood out to me.

Initially I wanted to carve a still life composition, and found two artist who caught my attention the first was Lon Etzel who carves Western Inspired realism (subject matter that I am quite fond of).

I found her work interesting in her realistic replications of soft, often light materials in marble and black granite.
I can see how stone carvers must maintain an emotional disconnection from their work because once complete, they will always have to let it go. This doesn't ever seem to be a problem. It's not like the painful separation felt by a mother who sends her baby off to college. Rather, a job is like an expensive, high-risk, dysfunctional son whom the father can't wait to kick out of the house as soon as he turns 18. So, with a "good-riddens" we are sending the job away and beginning the next task.

For the last week and a half we have had to put our carving on hold to make some necessary preparations for fast encroaching winter months. This includes framing, insulating and sealing the whole shop with plastic sheets. We are also setting up two wood burning stoves that will be used to heat the shop.

I hadn't any interesting photos of stone work to put up this week, so, I thought I would show and explain some of the many different chisels used.

Toothed, (or Clawed) chisels are essentially scarier looking flat chisels. They are used for many of the same purposes as flat chisel but will bite deeper into the stone and remove material much faster then there corresponding flat chisels. In this photo you'll notice the chisel and the left have pointed teeth where as the chisels on the right have flat teeth. The pointed teeth are much more effective on harder dense stone such as marble, the small sharp points are all that is required to cleanly chip the desired stone off. The flattened teeth of the chisel to the right are used for softer more porous stones such as limestone. When a pointy tipped chisels is used on soft stone it has the tendency of digging deeply into the stone rather then popping the piece off. The flat teeth make stop the the teeth from poking to deep and make the cut more clean and consistent.

Points, are the real work horses of a carver when it comes to roughing out.

Bull-nosed chisels are basically flat chisel with a rounded end. Their round end diverts energy from the hammer blow in many direction rather then just straight forward as seen in flat chisels. Because of the wide radius of destruction these little babies are capable of, they aren't always best for planing or careful drafting but they do a mean job in removing mass quantities of stone. Bull-nosed chisels are also useful in carving the interior of curved cuts and can be an effective solution to some awkward carving angles.

This little field trip was an opportunity to see some local sculpture. Inside the library were two beautiful marble statues. We marveled at the care put into carving of the chair, the carpet, and the woman’s gown and drapery. It’s in the seemingly insignificant parts of a piece that its quality is shown, and the skill of a carver is demonstrated in the fine details of a piece.

The trick to carving the characters is really in being able to see the piece three dimensionally, and as in drawing, sculpting is not so much about the physical movement of the hand as it is exercising the eyes in seeing. I am still having trouble “seeing” in three dimensions and need practice in order to gain confidence. Another aspect that makes carving the fox more difficult than the foliage is that with organic shapes such as leaves and vines you have some ability to mask a mistake (ah…..not that I have ever actually done this…) by changing the appearance of the leaf itself, but with faces and body parts there is less room for mistakes.. I am learning the lay of the workshop and am becoming more comfortable with the routine. Most importantly, I am finally remembering to put the tea kettle on at 10:00 every morning. Nick drinks tea religiously and I (as the new guy I'm assuming) must see to it that kettle is put on. This was the first responsibility I was given and Nick sees to it that I don't forget it. He never ceases to remind me of the morning Tea Break with a witty remark such as: "Hey Kyle what letter comes after 'S' again?" or "Hey Kyle, have you ever played golf? what are the sticks you put the ball on called?".

I was able to finish the foliage of my first stone last week, but have a lot of work left.
It was a rainy arrival but Nick was quite hospitable. He gave me a tour, showed me where I could park my truck temporarily, and invited me over for dinner. His shop amazed me and inside it included an office, a drafting room, a lunch room, a sculpting room, a metal working shop, some storage rooms, and a spacious carving studio. On the wall of his office hung huge collection of literature, clay molds, busts, sample carvings, and a great arsenal of tools, and It appeared like it could have been a library or art museum.

Tuesday morning I woke up got ready for my first day of work and at 8:00A.M. met Nick and my new coworker Michael Romanin in the shop. He showed me the stones that we would be working on; traced a template on one of them; hooked up an air hammer and went right to work. I observed as he masterfully controlled and maneuvered the foreign tool. He demonstrated what I was to do and set me up with a stone of my own. Once he selected a suitable air hammer for he went back to his stone and left me to battle it with this clumsy. for the rest of the day I awkwardly worked the airhammer as best I could and gradually made slow progress.

The pneumatic air hammer has relatively recently been adopted into the trade. It became popular in the late 1880's with introduction of steam powered air compressors. This hand tool can be difficult to master and takes as much or more concentration then the well known mallet and chisel. The benifit of the tool is its ability to remove stone very rapidly. I am still trying to get the hang of air hammers and can tell its going to be a long hard battle. My current incling is to drop this palpating beast of a tool and pick up the much friendly mallet and chiself that I used with Jean.
For the next few days I followed Nick's lead staying a few steps behind him in the removal of stone. and could slowly see the forms take shape. While carving we followed the Greek method of carving relief. This included cutting all of the backgrounds back to the desired depth and blocking out the shapes in the foreground.
While working with Jean I was exposed to many aspects of the trade, and was given the opportunity to help with the drafting, cutting, carving, moving, and installing of many different projects. It is still unclear to me whether or not I will pursue stone carving as my career for the rest of my life. It’s a trade that promises hard heavy work, a humble lifestyle, inconsistent work periods, and little financial security. I am hesitant to jump headlong into such a future. And yet, I’ve somehow caught the bug as many before me and have decided to nurture this strange interest in stone a bit longer.

Jean and I working on a limestone fireplace in 2009

I came to the conclusion earlier this year that if I was to continue with stone I would need a more consistent and focused environment to work. I searched a bit online and asked around but couldn’t find much in stone carving (as far as formal education went). It was in this pursuit that my error was revealed. Stone carving is not a trade that is learned in the conventional classroom, or given openly by paid instructors, but rather, it is a trade the must be stolen from the master. Every move the master makes must be replicated, and an observant eye must always be ready to steal the tricks of the trade. Throughout history this burglary has been the work of apprentices and I hope to continue in this theft. In the words of Picasso “Good artists borrow; great artists steal,”.

In 2009, While working for Jean, I had the opportunity of joining him at the Stone Carvers Guild annual meeting. While there I was able to build relationships with some carvers and join the guild as a general member. I was hoping this new resource would open doors to potential study and work opportunities in the future. This endeavor proved fruitful as Nicholas Fairplay, an English stone carver contacted me this summer and offered me a job. I jumped on this opportunity, bought a truck, packed my camper and began my journey.

The stone carvers guild began. To the untrained eye there may not have been anything particularly note worthy about the group of predominantly older men, but to me this curios crowd offered an extraordinary wealth of knowledge. Before me were master carvers of all persuasions; traditionally trained, Italian marble sculptors’; Indiana Limestone cutters; English carvers; professional masons; masterful artists; and the nicest group of Texan carvers you’d ever meet (not to mention a whole array of exceptional beards and mustaches.) The meeting was productive, enlightening, and jump started my excitement for the next step of my journey. Next stop Fairplay stone carvers in Oberlin, Ohio.....
